Plans To Build Bridge From Alaska To Russia Could Make Round-The-World Road Trip Possible

With all these terrifying aviation disasters happening lately, people are getting more and more afraid of dying. Even frequent flyers are starting to opt for trains, ferries and automobiles over planes wherever possible.

If you actually look at a map of the world, a simple bridge across that tiny expanse of water between the west coast of Alaska and east coast of Siberia (okay, it’s not THAT tiny but it’s still pretty small) is all it would take to link the Americas with Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Imagine being able to drive from Argentina, up through South and Central America, through the States, Canada, Russia, Asia, Europe, and even down to Africa… all in the comfort of your very own car!

The Head of Russian Academy of Science, Vladimir Fortov, has spoken to the Siberian Times about potential plans to create a super highway through Russia that follows the same route as the Trans-siberian railway from Moscow through towns like Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, to the coastal town of Vladivostok, where a bridge would then carry over to Alaska and the highway could continue through Anchorage down to Vancouver, Canada.

The idea is to boost Russia’s less-than-booming tourism industry, therefore boosting their economy.

“It will solve many problems in the development of the vast region,” Fortov told the Siberian Times.

“It is connected with social programs, and new fields, new energy resources, and so on. The idea is that based on the new technology of high-speed rail transport we can build a new railway near the Trans-siberian Railway, with the opportunity to go to Chukotka and Bering Straight and then to the American continent.”

The ideal way to market this appears to be that people can travel from London to New York on a sealed road via Europe, Russia, Canada and the States.

Sure, it might take you over 200 hours to get there but hey – sometimes you’ve gotta stop and smell the roses! Can’t do that from an airplane…
